How do I become a Sister?

Affiliate: During this time a woman becomes acquainted with the community through email, correspondence, phone calls and visits to the monastery while still living in her home.  This is a time to form relationships with the sisters and this life of prayer and ministry.

Postulant: The time of postulancy gives a woman experiences of living in community and time to explore monastic life more deeply through sharing community life and prayer.  During this stage, the postulant cares for her own financial needs.

Novice: The novice spends one full year embracing the monastic lifestyle of prayer, work and study of the Rule of Benedict, Scripture, monastic commitment, and theology.  The novitiate stage is the formal acceptance into the monastic community.

Temporary Professed: After completing the year of novitiate, the Sister makes monastic profession and continues her incorporation into the community through study and learning the rhythm of ministry and prayer.

Perpetually Professed: After a period of at least three years, the sister is fully incorporated into the community through her monastic commitment.

Monastic Profession is the promise to live a life long commitment to a particular monastery to seek God.  The monastic way of life is shaped by the Rule of Benedict, in which Benedict asks his followers to live a life of obedience, stability, and conversion of life.
