SISTER MARILYN HECK

Sister Marilyn Heck is the youngest of six girls in the family of the late Thomas and Mary Heck, Hettinger, ND. Her early education was in a country school. She graduated from Hettinger High School in 1953 and then entered Sacred Heart Monastery, Yankton and began her teaching ministry after graduating from Mount Marty College in 1966.

Sister Marilyn was one of the group of sisters heeding the call to establish a new community and became a founding member of Mother of God Monastery, Pierre in 1961, now at Watertown.

Her teaching career has been in Lincoln, NE, Webster, Ipswich, Polo, Hoven, SD. She was teacher/principal in Glen Ullin and Fort Yates, ND. She had a tremendous love and energy to make schools the best place for children to learn. Her hobby is cooking and baking and she finds great joy in preparing a meal for others.

In 1993 Sister obtained a degree in Pastoral Ministry from St. Mary’s College, Winona, MN. She has been director of Religious Education from 1987, serving in Pierre and Holy Name, Watertown.  In 2000 she became a Master Catechist for the Sioux Falls diocese.
