SISTER IDA HERICKS
Sister
Ida is the daughter of the late Catherine and Joseph Hericks. As a
native of Hoven, SD she attended the parochial school where she
experienced the sisters as model teachers and community leaders. She
speaks of her call as coming to her at a very early age and began to
talking about it in third grade. She said, “I was very excited and
told everyone until my teenage years when I heard my friends talking
about other plans and then I kept quiet. During a retreat as a junior at
Mount Marty I asked permission to enter the convent. I desired to become
a nurse but teachers were needed so I was asked to pursue a teaching
degree. During the fourteen years of teaching I came to realize
that striving for holiness needed to come from the heart, a step beyond
knowing how to become holy. When volunteers for the missions were asked
for, I volunteered and was asked to go to Guatemala. There the deep
faith of the people in the midst of poverty and oppression has spoken to
me and has shaped my life." |
