SISTER ALMA HARTUNG

Hello, I am Sister Alma Hartung.  I’m a native South Dakotan from the town of Hoven.  When I was 3 my mother died, we were 5 children  — 4 boys and myself; later my Dad remarried and there were 9 more children, 4 of whom were born after I entered the convent.  I learned very early how to keep house.

I entered the monastery in 1938 at Yankton, SD but in 1961 when a new house, Mother of God, was to be opened, I went along to help with the new  foundation.  My  work  was in education as a teacher and as a principal. The second time in Glen Ullin, ND; I found myself teaching the children of the children from my earlier years.  Some of my students have joined Mother of God Monastery and there were a number of ‘my boys’ who went on to become priests; I am very proud of them.  I also worked for a time in the hospital in Pastoral care.
