Sister
Regina Haag, 66, died on May 26, 2001, at Mother of God
Monastery.
Regina was born March 6, 1935, the
twelfth child of Fridolin and Wilhelmina Wanner Haag in
Antelope, North Dakota.
Her parents were poor; they never had
much, but they were happy and enjoyed life. Life on the farm was
difficult, so her father was thinking of selling the farm and
moving to California.
When Regina was in the first grade, her
father became ill and died on December 8 of cancer. Her mother
remained on the farm where she raised her family.
Regina attended St. Mary's Grade and
High School in Richardton, North Dakota. On September 29, 1953,
she entered Sacred Heart Convent in Yankton. Entering the
novitiate, Regina was given the name Sister Emma, but she later
chose to return to her baptismal name of Regina.
She graduated from Mount Marty College
in Yankton with a B.A. in Elementary education. S. Regina taught
elementary school in Yankton, Hoven, Ipswich, Kranzburg, Pierre,
Milbank, Rapid City and Watertown, South Dakota; Glen Ullin,
Richardton, and Fort Yates, North Dakota; and Red Lake, MN.
S. Regina visited the elderly and
shut-ins of St. Joseph Cathedral Parish in Sioux Falls. She
returned to the monastery in 1992, where she ministered as
hospitality director at Harmony Hill Center. In 1995, she moved
to Baudette, MN where she was in charge of Mission Effectiveness
and Pastoral Care in the hospital and nursing home.
In May of 2000, S. Regina was diagnosed
with pancreatic cancer and was given four to six months to live.
She returned to Baudette in July of 2000, where she continued to
minister until January, when she returned to the monastery.
S. Regina was a source of inspiration
as she death with her illness and prepared to meet her Creator.
She lived life to the fullest and appreciated each day as a gift
from God.
S. Regina is survived by her sisters,
Sister Veronica Haag of Mother of God Monastery, Mary Palm,
Margaret Mook, Minnie Schatz, and Emma Haag; her brothers Joe
